Who Luna Is
Luna is 100 pounds of quiet authority. When someone new comes to the house, she positions herself where she can see the door and the people she's protecting, and she waits. If you pass her test — which is really just a patience test, because she needs to decide about you on her own schedule — she'll lean her full weight into your leg and that's it, you're her person now.
She is intimidating to people who don't know her. That's honest. A hundred-pound Rottweiler who watches you without blinking will do that. But the dog behind that presence rides in the car with her head on the console, visits Grandma and Grandpa's garden, walks at Rusch Park, and sleeps quietly at the bedside — checking the house at night without making a sound. She's not aggressive. She's serious. There's a difference, and it's the whole reason this breed exists.
The Rottweiler Temperament
The AKC breed standard describes the Rottweiler as "basically a calm, confident and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships." That single sentence tells you more about the breed than most of what you'll find online.
Rottweilers have what trainers call a "wait-and-see" attitude. They don't rush to greet. They don't bark first and think later. They assess. This makes them outstanding family dogs for people who understand that a dog earning your trust and you earning theirs are the same process. It also means socialization matters — a Rottweiler who hasn't been exposed to enough of the world during their critical developmental window can become suspicious of everything outside their home. That's not protectiveness. That's anxiety wearing a guard dog costume.
A well-raised Rottweiler is one of the most stable, loyal, and genuinely gentle large breeds you can live with. They were originally drovers — walking cattle to market across the Roman Empire, then pulling butchers' carts through medieval Germany. Something most people don't know: Rottweilers consistently score above average on the American Temperament Test Society (ATTS) evaluations — higher than Golden Retrievers, Collies, and most breeds people think of as "family dogs." The test measures stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and the ability to distinguish between threatening and non-threatening situations. Rottweilers pass at about 84%.
